The Commission President was welcomed by the 3rd Mayor of the City of Munich, Verena Dietl. She was delighted to welcome Ursula von der Leyen to Neuperlach and to show the development of the district through the European-funded project "Creating NEBourhoods Together": "We are very proud to have the New European Bauhaus project here in Munich. It shows that the heart of the EU beats in the municipalities too."
With more than 70,000 inhabitants, Neuperlach is the largest German urban expansion area of the post-war period. Today, the district faces major social, urban planning and structural challenges - with a large number of residential and office buildings from the 1960s to 1980s in need of renovation and neglected open spaces.
The aim of the joint work with citizens, creatives and experts in the Creating NEBourhoods Together living labs is to develop ideas that enable sustainable living and working in Neuperlach. The focus is on public space, attractive living, energy communities and local mobility as well as youth culture, nutrition, biodiversity and the circular economy. All of the experience and results generated as part of the lighthouse project for the New European Bauhaus will subsequently be made available throughout Europe. Neuperlach will thus become a role model for other European cities.
The Creating NEBourhoods Together project will run until the end of March 2025.
A public conference will be held in Munich on March 27 and 28, 2025, which will be accompanied by an exhibition at the Architekturgalerie München and the Plantreff.
The Replication Handbook will also be published in March 2025.
