Munich data delicacies wanted: New Open Data competition starts in January

Go back

With a fresh competition, the City of Munich and the start-up proband15 are inviting all data fans, creatives and tech-savvy Munich residents to reinterpret the city's open data in exciting new ways. Under the title "Munich data delicacies wanted", interested parties can submit their ideas from January 7 to February 11, 2026 and show the potential of open data.

The competition was initiated by the start-up proband15, whose project "Datengartl'n" won the "Open Data Potentials for Munich" challenge as part of the Munich Innovation Competition in 2025. Building on this success, the company now wants to motivate even more people to make creative use of the city's freely accessible data.

Open to a spirit of discovery and creative data ideas

Open data is playing an increasingly important role when it comes to driving innovation in urban development. It is machine-readable, can be used free of charge and can be reused in many ways thanks to open licenses. This is exactly where the competition comes in: We are looking for visualizations, analyses and applications that use the Munich Open Data Portal in new, surprising or particularly vivid ways.

Possible contributions could be, for example

  • unusual correlations between data sets that provide new insights into the city
  • artistic and creative visualizations that aesthetically showcase data
  • interactive dashboards that allow users to immerse themselves in the discovery of the data
  • humorous interpretations that encourage reflection in a light-hearted way
  • elegant solutions for existing data challenges

A mandatory requirement for participation is the use of at least one data set from the Munich Open Data Portal at opendata.muenchen.de. An expert jury will evaluate the submitted projects and award prizes to particularly creative, innovative or technically convincing submissions.

Funded by the City of Munich

The competition is organized by proband15 GmbH and sponsored by the City of Munich as part of the innovation competition. The aim is to further raise awareness of the opportunities offered by open data and to support a creative environment for data-driven innovations in Munich.
