The founding team led by Martin Duffner, Christina Scherzer, Eduardo Romero Borrero and Erick Pano is developing catheters that disinfect themselves through the targeted emission of light beams. This polymicrobial disinfection is also effective against multi-resistant pathogens and thus addresses one of the most urgent clinical problems: catheter-associated infections. The potential effects are enormous - fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, reduced use of antibiotics, noticeable relief for hospital staff and considerable savings in the healthcare system.
The award ceremony at the Bayerischer Hof provided a worthy setting for this prestigious award. In their acceptance speech, the team emphasized what the words from the laudation - especially those of Prof. Dr. Christian Karagiannidis, intensive care physician and proven expert - mean to them.
