MeetUp@HM: Gendered Innovations: A Change of Perspective

Go back

The Center for Research Promotion and HM:UniverCity of Munich University of Applied Sciences invites you to the next MeetUp@HM. Are you already using gender aspects as innovation potential for your research or start-up project? Learn more about the topic "Gendered Innovations: A Change of Perspective". Register now for the 29.06.2023 from 17:00-19:00 here.

The next MeetUp@HM is not about colons, asterisks or quotas. It's about how taking gender- and diversity-sensitive perspectives into account can advance the development of socially relevant solutions. After all, what is often seen as annoying extra work can, on closer inspection, mean true innovation potential for your research or start-up project. Gender bias can result not only in missed market opportunities, but also in high financial and human costs. And please don't think pink tool sets or pink keyboards right now. That's the wrong approach.

Rather, think of one of the following examples:

Image recognition: facial recognition software learned from biased data sets recognizes women worse than men and Black people less well than white people. It happens that Black women are not recognized at all.

Automobile development: wearing seat belts reduces the risk of sustaining serious injuries in a car crash. However, seat belts protect women less well than men on average. For a long time, the design was based only on the requirements of an average male body.

Medicine: The view that cardiovascular diseases mainly affect men has persisted in the past. Heart attacks in women were recognized much later because the symptoms differed. This lack of knowledge meant that female patients were considered much less likely to be diagnosed with heart attacks, which was the cause of death for many women.

Not every research project is gender relevant. But considering gender, as well as other diversity issues, is much more critical to the quality of research than is often assumed.

Do you have a research or start-up project and would like to discuss whether gender-relevant aspects have been sufficiently taken into account?

Furthermore, are you still looking for suitable funding opportunities and like-minded scientists or founders to get started?

Then you should definitely register for the next MeetUp@HM on 29.06.2023.
