Half-time in EXIST start-up grant for start-up League team Omegga

Go back

For half a year now, our Start-up League team Omegga has been enjoying the EXIST-Gründerstipendium from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The team's journey at SCE started with a strong 1st place at the Strascheg Award 2021, in the category "Best Business Idea from Science and Practice". Subsequently, they successfully went through Batch #6 of the Start-up Certificate funding program of HM and SCE. So it's time to take stock.

The team of 8, consists of Till, Katharina, Paul, Clara, Moritz, Kyle, Jamie and Ulrich. Together, they are using absorption spectroscopy to develop a non-invasive solution for sexing unhatched chicks before the day they feel pain (brood day 7) in order to save millions of male chicks from being killed and thus offer laying hen farms a legally compliant and future-proof alternative to the resource-intensive rearing of brother cocks.

Since the start of the funding in August 2022, the team has already been able to celebrate several highlights and successes. At the forefront here must be the expansion of the team to 8 people. This paved the way for a patent application and the official foundation of Omegga GmbH.

Since then, Omegga was able to carry out several test iterations with Lab Prototype and the internalization of all laboratory activities into the HM premises. This meant that nothing stood in the way of the planning/construction of the industrial pilot (deployment in hatcheries planned for Q2/23). In addition to existing funding, the team from Batch #6 of the Start-up Certificate was also able to secure participation in the EIT Food Seedbed Incubator Program and the BMBF's coveted Kick-Start Prototype funding, and successfully completed a pre-seed funding round to accelerate the team's expansion.

They continued to wow jurors and audiences with their idea. For example, they won 1st place at the Kick-Start Competition, Future Conference Leipzig from the BMBF (09/ 2022) and received the "Best Presentation" award from the EIT Food Seedbed Incubator (11/22). Their pitches at AgriFood Demo Day at Munich Urban Co-Lab (09/22) and Start Munich Pitch Night at Plug & Play Center (12/22) also received rave reviews.

Currently, the team is looking for hardware engineer:s to build the industrial pilot. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact us at www.omegga.eu/

"We take this opportunity to say thank you for the great support at SCE and Munich University of Applied Sciences and especially to our mentor Prof. Dr. Julia Eiche from FK03 at Munich University of Applied Sciences. We are looking forward to the coming six months, to the challenges and successes together."

The EXIST-Gründerstipendium supports students, graduates and scientists from universities and non-university research institutions who want to realize their start-up idea and turn it into a business plan.
